We originally planned to spend a few days in Dallas for a conference but the excessive heat wreaked havoc on us so we detoured somewhere a bit cooler - Cañon City, Colorado! This was our second time here, having visited almost four years to the exact day in 2020.
I worked the rest of the week but since we were two hours behind east coast time we were able to get out and enjoy things a bit.
Tunnel Drive Trail
Experiencing Tunnel Drive a second time gave us the opportunity to see things differently. We didn't notice the wonderful plant life the first time, and with the kids being older, we were able to venture a little further out!
Red Rock Canyon Open Space
We had to get new tires from a Discount Tire in Colorado Springs so we took a long hike through the Red Rock Canyon Open Space (again). Even though we were here at the same time of year last time we came through, the wildflowers continued to amaze us. The boys were able to get in a lot of hiking and we didn't have to carry them this time!
Garden of the Gods
The surprise awaiting us at Garden of the Gods was seeing the deer throughout the park. They're definitely used to humans but still kept their distance.
Royal Gorge Canyon Train Ride
We surprised the boys with a train ride through the Royal Gorge Canyon. We chose the evening option since it was a bit longer. The most fascinating part was learning about the history of the gorge and seeing the old water pipeline running through the gorge was was built by hand in the early 20th century.
Up Next
Resuming our previously scheduled route, we head to Mesa Verde National Park in Mancos, Colorado.
